WATER TREATMENT, WASTEWATER TREATMENT & RECYCLING

SSI has designed well over 100 water and wastewater treatment plants throughout the region, ranging in size and complexity from small pond systems treating 100 kl/d, to large nutrient removal activated sludge plants serving up to 1,25 million people. With high eutrophication of water impoundments in the region (a process whereby water bodies, such as lakes, estuaries, or slow-moving streams receive excess nutrients that stimulate excessive plant growth), SSI has become a leader in developing biological nitrogen and phosphorus removal technology. The firm also offers proven expertise in treating and disposing of biological sludge, in particular offering solutions to the complex problem of handling phosphorus-rich sludge from biological nutrient removal plants. SSI holds the provisional patent on a low cost process, known as FILTROX, developed to improve the performance of trickling filters at wastewater treatment plants. The company has also been in the forefront of water recycling to augment available raw water resources and to provide industrial water at a lower cost than potable supplies. In the field of water treatment SSI has been in the forefront of introducing ozonation in combination with dissolved air flotation.
