This unit has grown rapidly to accommodate SSI’s activities beyond South Africa’s borders. Comprising internationally experienced experts in the fields of transport, water, industry (buildings, electrical and mechanical), agriculture and the environment, the International Business Unit focuses on service delivery throughout Africa, as well as in other parts of the globe through our association with DHV and other international consultants and companies.
In Africa, project funding from international funding institutions is critical and SSI remains fully conversant with the latest procedures required by donor bodies such as the World Bank, the European Union and the African Development Bank.
The unit works in close cooperation with SSI’s international partner DHV, which has representation in 28 countries in Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Canada, the United States and Latin America.
The International Business Unit offers a direct contact and liaison facility for our international clients via a network of offices, partner companies and strategic alliance partners. We regard co-operation, client access to project information and skills transfer as paramount and we pride ourselves on our excellent relationships with local consulting engineering companies and technical institutions across the continent and beyond.
PROJECTS
Mandena Mine, Madagascar
Rio Tinto is preparing to mine the sand dunes around Fort Dauphin for heavy minerals with a mining process requiring vast quantities of water. SSI found that a rock-fill weir constructed across the Anony River would provide the optimal solution. The weir is technically challenging due to being sited on deep dune sand in an environmental sensitive area. SSI is also designing the water supply for the staff village, a new port, now under construction, and the mineral separation plant. The mine will bring many employment opportunities to the area which a clean water supply makes possible.
