DHV, one of Europe's leading consulting engineering firms, which has an established relationship with SSI spanning more than a decade, increased its shareholding in SSI to 70% in 2008. A Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) investment company, Sangena, has a 15% shareholding.
In addition, the full spectrum of junior to senior management are the beneficiaries of a 15% employee share trust, in keeping with the goals of the BEE Act and the Construction Industry Charter. SSI management is entirely in the hands of local managers.
The South African Ultimate Beneficiary Ownership (excluding DHV's international holding) is 86% black.

CEO of SSI —Naren Bhojaram
SSI CEO Naren Bhojaram lives in Johannesburg with his wife and two sons. He spent his youth in Pietermaritzburg, capital of the eastern province of KwaZulu-Natal , where he studied civil engineering. Naren obtained his BSc Civil Engineering Degree from the Natal University (now University of KwaZulu Natal ) in 1984. After Naren graduated he joined the City of Pietermaritzburg Engineers Department for a number of years before moving to SSI's regional office in Pietermaritzburg, more than seventeen years ago.
Naren was appointed CEO in 2006. As CEO, Naren is primarily responsible for the day-to-day management of SSI. However, ‘people' engineering still occupies a special place in his heart. This is largely because it enables him to use his technical expertise to help build this country and to provide a better future for its society.
In the past, Naren has used his knowledge to bring water supplies and sanitary facilities to people who had never had these services before. He has particularly enjoyed designing systems in inaccessible areas, with limited financial resources available.
However, he says his biggest reward has been the appreciation on the faces of the beneficiaries when their new facilities were handed over. Naren's passion remains ‘people' engineering.
