On a continent where more than 300 million people lack adequate access to safe water with some 14 countries currently facing water stress or scarcity, water management remains a key development issue.
The Pan-African Implementation and Partnership Conference on Water (PANAFCON), held in 2003, ended with an action plan to meet Africa 's World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) targets, the African Water Vision and the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) on water. SSI was among the more than 1 000 participants who attended the conference from across the world.

Civilab is one of the most technically advanced civil engineering laboratories in South Africa .
The laboratory was established in the late 1960's and has been performing site investigations and testing for the entire spectrum of civil engineering projects throughout the Southern African region and further afield.
The combination of Civilab 's wide range of specialised testing and geographically diverse operations provide the civil engineering and related industries the most comprehensive range of integrated advisory and technical services.
Services are specially tailored to meet client needs. They include structuring of testing programmes to meet particular design requirements, exploration of suitable building materials, laboratory- and field-testing, and technical supervision on construction sites.
