On a continent where more than 300 million people lack adequate access to safe water with some 14 countries currently facing water stress or scarcity, water management remains a key development issue.
The Pan-African Implementation and Partnership Conference on Water (PANAFCON), held in 2003, ended with an action plan to meet Africa 's World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) targets, the African Water Vision and the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) on water. SSI was among the more than 1 000 participants who attended the conference from across the world.
